As we approach the midpoint of 2021, financial markets, for the most part, have had a good year so far. Looking at US equities, the S&P 500 is up about 11% and the NASDAQ about 5%, from start of the year levels, and the under-performance of the latter has led to a wave of stories about whether this is the start of the long-awaited comeback of value stocks, after a decade of lagging growth stocks. There is more to democracy than simply using your vote once in a while. Democracy may be a way of life that prompts people to be more tolerant of plurality and to interact in moral debate with people from different backgrounds, only people aren't too afraid to mention that they think differently will democracy cause an end which we would like to ascertain — self-transformation. In other words, what makes the democratic way of life so powerful and dynamic, is that it generates its own values.

Of course, there are some prerequisites for that self-transformation. In short, not only do people need liberties like those of speech and vote, but they also need a realm during which they'll use those liberties effectively, and that we have come to call that realm the general public sphere. Consistent with philosophers like Jürgen Habermas, the general public sphere may be a space where individuals have the liberty to participate as equals during a rational discussion so on promote the commonweal.
